“I didn’t realize how much pain I was in because I was taking so many anti-inflammatories beforehand. So, I went off my anti-inflammatories…and I was like I don’t know if I could do this.”
When Paul came to Renew Medical Centers, his hip, low back, and knee were in real bad shape, especially his hip.
When reflecting on Paul’s initial patient consultation, Dr. Paul Baker stated, “I’ve been practicing for 24 years now, his right hip had very, very severe degenerative changes. Probably one of the worst hips I’ve seen. And I actually told Paul you probably have maybe a 20% chance of success.”
Paul received regenerative and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy for in his hip, low back, and knee.
Within a week after regenerative treatment, he wasn’t in pain anymore.
We often see patients after they have either been told that they need hip replacement surgery or they had a surgery in the past that did not work well for them.
They know that surgery is traumatic and risky and they would prefer not to have it. Regenerative and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapies are some of the newest options for people who suffer from knee pain and problems that want to avoid having surgery. What makes regenerative therapy so promising is the fact that it helps to address the cause of the problem instead of just treating the symptoms.
Renew Medical Centers is the place patients go for non-surgical treatment of joint arthritis and other musculoskeletal problems.
In this video, Paul discusses his experience and how he’s doing three months after treatment.
Dr. Baker (Dr): Hey, this is Dr. Paul Baker. And I have Paul Kennedy here. And three months ago, Paul had his low back, his right hip, and his right knee injected. And just to preface the case a little bit, his right hip was, I’ve been practicing for 24 years now, his right hip had very, very severe degenerative changes. Probably one of the worst hips I’ve seen. And I actually told Paul you probably have maybe a 20% chance of success. Didn’t I say that, Paul?
Paul (P): Yes.
Dr: And we’re going to hear his story on how he actually did with his hip and his knee. So, Paul, go ahead take it away. Let’s talk about how you felt before your injections for the hip and the knee.
P: Anyway. Yeah. The beforehand after I had to take go off anti-inflammatories, it was really, really, really painful. I was like, I don’t know if I could do this if this doesn’t work. I don’t know if I can make it three months. So, it was really painful. Had really sharp pain in my hip and pain in my knee really sharp. I didn’t want to move. I really tried to stay, not to move. If I had to go to the kitchen or to the bathroom, I made it worth my while because I wasn’t going to go back.
Dr: And, this is pre-injection.
P: That is pre-injection.
Dr: Uh-huh. And then you said the week before, like we don’t want our patients taking the anti-inflammatories, you said that was horrible pain, correct?
P: Right. That’s what I was talking about before. When I went off to anti-inflammatories, that’s where I felt the really sharp pain. I didn’t realize how much pain I was in because I was taking so many anti-inflammatories beforehand. So, I went off my anti-inflammatories the Friday before, made it through the weekend. and I was able to take Tylenol, and I was like I don’t know if I could do this after the injection, if it doesn’t work. I don’t know if I can go ninety days, but after then the injection and the injection was really very simple thing. It was less than a flu shot type of deal. I was very comfortable and wasn’t any pain but still the regular pain was there. So that was a Friday, and then Wednesday, I realized that I wasn’t in pain most of the day. And then Thursday, I wasn’t in pain at all and haven’t been in pain since. And, so, my mobility has changed quite a bit. In fact, I was videotaping myself daily. Then, after that Thursday, it’s just it’s always been good. So, I used to upstairs one step at a time all these dragging that right leg. And now it’s like up and down the stairs and walking around and I don’t think twice about going. If I got to go to the car, it doesn’t bother me. It’s not like a dreadful thing.
Dr: Right?
P: So, the move mobility has really changed quite a bit. Back in the gym, able to do cardio. I don’t limit myself to a certain cardio, which before was something I didn’t move my hip or my knee very much. But now I’m trying to find something larger range.
Dr: Yeah, that’s awesome. And then pre-injection, the week that you were off all of your medications, where would you rate your hip pain and your knee pain on a one to ten, ten being the worst?
P: It was over nine, if not ten. Right. Especially the hips. The knee, because you have so much pain, you don’t notice that one pain or the other. So, the hip was always a harder pain. So, it was like nine/ten.
Dr: Right.
P: The knee was probably right underneath it.
Dr: Okay, and then post injection, three months today.
P: I don’t have one. I pulled that sheet out. One or zero or what that and I don’t know that, you know, one is just like that’s probably normal being my age and my weight pain, you know.
Dr: Right, right. Well, that’s fantastic. And one last question. Would you actually recommend this procedure to family and friends?
P: Oh, I have.
Dr: Yes.
P: I don’t know how many people on Facebook have asked me, and follow up with me, and follow up with me. They constantly are asking right. Which reminds me of to do a little follow-up after today, because I forget about it. I don’t even think about it now.
Dr: Sure.
P: The one thing they did ask me was, “How long is this going to last?” What’s when I tell him was like, “Well, until I wear it out again, I guess.”
Dr: Right.
P: It’s the hip and see and my back is straightened out. That’s why I wore it out. So that’s not going to happen.
Dr: Right.
P: So, I’ll probably wear something else out besides that.
Dr: Yeah. Well, that’s very exciting and the reason I was so excited to do your re-eval after three months is, like I told you and like we talked about, your hip was so bad and I gave it a 20% success chance and now you’re sitting here today pain-free. I’m just so excited and thinking.
P: You’re not the only one.
Dr: Yes.
P: I had three other doctors tell me: “You’re not a candidate.”
Dr: Right.
P: So then you said, “It’s up to you.”
Dr: Yes.
P: And you know, I’m not in pain at all.
Dr. Well, that’s exciting. So, thank you so much for sharing your testimony. We appreciate it and looking forward to you doing better and better.
P: Yeah. Thanks.
Regenerative therapy is a viable alternative for addressing problems that cause chronic hip pain.
Along with surgery, the traditional medical treatments for hip pain have been physical therapy, exercise, pain medications, anti-inflammatories, and steroid injections. These will sometimes alleviate pain but are often ineffective at addressing the actual condition.
Regenerative cell therapy involves allowing your body to heal itself, using naturally occurring cells, and growth factors. Treatment assists your body in regenerating tissue, reducing pain, and reducing inflammation in damaged muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bone.
Regenerative therapy is a low risk, viable alternative to surgery. As discussed, it is a completely different approach to treating chronic hip pain.
As opposed to going under the knife and replacing the hip with a prosthetic implant or having arthroscopic hip surgery, regenerative treatment gives the patient an opportunity for their body to heal degenerated and injured tissue.
With any medical treatment, there are no guarantees that it will or will not work for a patient. Each patient’s condition is unique. There are some cases where a patient will not be a candidate for regenerative treatment.
Other than the hip, areas treated also include back/spine, neck, knees, shoulders, hands and wrists, feet and ankles, and more.
